March is Contemporary Art Month in San Antonio and tonight I will be attending the world premiere of Ondvegissulur, Poem of Light at Blue Star Contemporary Art Center. I’m pretty pumped as artistic events make my bohemian heart go pitter-patter. Plus there are supposed to be Icelandic dignitaries there and no one loves men that aren’t from America like this girl.

I’m so excited, I just booked my ticket to Los Angeles! I will be travelling next month to visit my friend and old roommate from New York in the City of Angels. I haven’t taken a real vacation in a long time (which is very hard for someone who suffers from chronic wanderlust) and the last time I was on a plane was when I was moving back to San Antonio from New York City almost two years ago.

Now that my plane ticket is purchased, the exciting part begins. Now I get to spend the next 34 days making an itinerary and creating wardrobe looks. It is amazing how having something to look forward to can totally shift your mood and give you a new excitement for life. That is one of the reasons I love travel so much: it isn’t even the actual trip you take, it is the entire journey. The process of preparing yourself for an amazing life experience is rewarding in and of itself, the actual adventure is just the icing on the cake.

“Censorship”

Say Si’s opening reception for Art Alive 2.0 showcased emerging young talent ranging from painters, sculptors and film makers in celebration of Contemporary Art Month. My personal favorite was this large scale piece by 16 year old Morgan Mueller. The only thing better than the maturity of this piece was the juxtaposed conversation happening in front of it where one young student attempted to explain censorship to his classmate.

All jokes aside, if you haven’t been to Say Si, I highly recommend a trip—some of the work is so great you forget some of the artists aren’t even old enough to drive.

What is Local Media Month?

Local Media Month (LMM) is a city-organized educational partnership, created by the Media Justice League (MJL), with non-governmental organizations, media outlets and community groups promoting media awareness, sharing big picture information, cultivating new media users and nurturing an ongoing relationship with current users.

From education to entertainment, media’s role is disseminating information. Local media is obligated to engage a community, learn about its needs and teach grassroots organizations, governmental agencies and average citizens how to reach out, get the information they need and share their own experiences. The project fulfills the obligation, allowing each city to grow customized events through an organic process, creating personalized experiences for citizens. City level organization allows communities to focus on unique needs, engaging individuals in a meaningful, effective manner.

While individuals may turn to media in times of crisis, emergency use encompasses only one public function of our local media and doesn’t allow interaction enough to sustain the industry as a whole. An awareness campaign of this nature creates an opportunity to educate the public on media’s everyday necessity, including the impact layoffs and changing formats in the newsroom have on the community as a whole. Other factors to consider include the democratizing role of technology in local media and ways news platforms, i.e. print, television, radio and web, can develop a driving force for greater consumption.
